What is Mock Convention?
Once called the “the biggest and boomingest” by Time Magazine, Mock Convention is a completely student-led 501(c)(3) that projects the presidential candidate for the party not in power at that time.
Mock Con does not endorse candidates, we predict them.
The political team, consisting of National, Regional, and State Chairs, collaborates to predict the result of the primary elections each election year. The completely nonpartisan research is done through political outreach and data analysis. The prediction made by this team is the oldest and the most accurate in the country.
95% of students get involved to support political research, help organize the convention weekend and gain media coverage, but only few hold leadership positions each cycle.
So What Did I Do…?
As Maine State Chair, I contributed to the prediction by informing myself on the impact of candidate policies on Maine voters’ mindsets and relaying key findings to the rest of the political team. I monitored polls and facilitated conversations with representatives from Susan Collins’ Office and the Maine House, Journalists, and polling professionals. I strategically focused my questions on national updates as they pertained to Maine voters. See my insights being used to support the larger prediction here.
Throughout the year, I recruited 13 delegates to assist in the research process. They helped with email outreach, forming questions for political professionals, and poll tracking. In addition to research, I also led my delegation through the process of designing and building a float specific to my state (yes, it was lobster themed and no, I am not an artist).
At the very end of the convention weekend, I made an informed prediction for Maine and reported it in front of the entire convention. With thousands of people watching, I ditched the usual report style and delivered the information in a more engaging way. Alongside 51 other State Chairs, I helped the Mock Con team make another accurate prediction for the primary elections. And then Billy Ray Cyrus performed.
